The East Room, the largest and most formal space on the White House's main floor, is the subject here, and its chandeliers are the detail that draws the eye. The photograph dates to between 1902 and 1910, a period when the White House interior was being restored toward a more formal early nineteenth-century character, following a renovation begun in 1902. The room has long hosted state receptions and balls, and in 1865 it held the body of Abraham Lincoln as he lay in state.
