The East Drawing Room was one of the ground-floor state rooms where guests were received, and this stereograph shows it as it looked in 1898, before the major interior remodeling of 1902. Stereo cards like this one were viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into a single three-dimensional scene, and they were popular parlor entertainment in the late 1800s. This example was copyrighted by T.W. Ingersoll and published by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, with copies sold door to door by canvassers, a common way such views reached middle-class homes.
