The east front of the White House, under a blanket of snow, is the focus here, a quieter view of the building than the formal portraits and ceremonial scenes that usually fill photo collections of the place. National Photo Company, a Washington studio that produced a large body of city views in the early twentieth century, made the picture sometime between 1910 and 1930. Snowfall in the capital could bring the government and its grounds to a near standstill for a day or two, and photographers often seized those moments to show familiar landmarks in an unfamiliar light. The image is worth a look for its stillness and the way the snow softens the building's lines.
