The first thing that sets this picture apart is its hour and its weather: a night view of the White House under a fresh fall of snow, where the building's pale façade and the dark grounds around it would have been lit only by street lamps and whatever glow spilled from its windows. Night exposures of this kind were difficult around 1907, since photographers needed long exposure times and heavy equipment, so the image records a deliberate effort to capture the building in its winter quiet. Washington in the early 1900s was a city still growing into its role as a national capital, and the President's residence was a place where the public could stroll the grounds and look up at the building. Notice how the snow softens the outlines of the structure and the trees, turning an everyday landmark into something almost still and ghostly.
