Taken from the top of the Washington Monument, this view looks down on the White House and the open grounds around it, a vantage few visitors of the period could reach. The monument, finished in 1884 and about 555 feet tall, gave photographers a rare elevated angle on the Executive Mansion, which in 1911 was home to President William Howard Taft. The record's date and caption details are unverified, so the exact day and photographer remain uncertain.
