Printed on a stereo card and issued by Underwood & Underwood, this view of the White House's exterior dates to about 1909, the year William Howard Taft took office and moved into the executive mansion. Stereographs like this were sold in sets and viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which gave the two nearly identical images a sense of depth. Underwood & Underwood was one of the largest publishers of such cards, and its catalogs helped make views of Washington landmarks familiar to households across the country. The record notes that its caption information is unverified, so the exact date and vantage point should be treated with some caution.
