The view looks at the south facade of the White House, with the glass conservatory wing rising at the left and an American flag flying above the roofline. The Detroit Publishing Company made this photochrom in the years between 1898 and 1914, when the firm sold color prints of American landmarks to tourists and collectors. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, built up color through several stone lithographic plates, so the greens of the lawn and glasshouse and the pale stone of the walls were applied by hand-registered layers rather than captured on film. The greenhouses on the White House grounds were a working part of the presidential household, supplying plants for the rooms and grounds.
