The south elevation shows the garden-side face of the President's House, the view most often seen from the Ellipse. The record notes miscellaneous studies on the reverse, a detail worth noticing because architects often reused sheets and annotated both sides. The building traces to a design by Irish-born architect James Hoban, selected in a competition in 1792, and it was rebuilt after British troops set it on fire in 1814. The sheet belongs to the Library of Congress's Architecture, Design and Engineering drawings.
