The south face of the President's House, captured in this half-plate daguerreotype, is probably a winter view, judging by the light and the bare surroundings. The building had been rebuilt after British troops burned it in 1814, and by about 1846, when this plate was made, it was the working home of President James K. Polk, while the grounds around it were still being shaped. Daguerreotypes needed long exposures, so the image captures a still, unhurried moment rather than the activity of the day. The Library of Congress acquired the plate in 1972.
