This halftone reproduction shows a model of a proposed enlargement of the White House, viewed from the North Front, the side with the main entrance and carriage drive. It was printed as plate 13 in *Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Capital*, a House document issued in 1901 to mark the centennial of Washington as the seat of government. Around the turn of the century, planners and officials were debating how the executive mansion should grow to meet the needs of a larger federal government. Those debates led to additions in 1902, which is why a model like this one is useful for seeing the designs that were considered before the building changed.
