The front elevation drawn in 1828 shows the White House as its architects intended it to look from the street, a flat, measured view with no people, carriages, or shadows to soften the lines. It is an ink and graphite drawing on paper, the kind of working document that builders and officials used to plan repairs and check proportions. By 1828 the building had been rebuilt after British troops burned it in 1814, and its north facade, with the columned portico and the stately central block, stood as the public face of the young federal government. Architectural drawings like this one, made in the 1820s, help show how the house was understood and maintained in the years just after its restoration.
