A long panoramic print shows a line of Navy yeomen (F) posed on the White House grounds in February 1919. The yeomen (F) were women who enlisted in the Navy during the First World War to fill clerical and administrative jobs, freeing men for sea duty. Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, whose collection holds this print, was a strong advocate of their service. About 11,000 women served in the rating before the Navy discharged them after the war. The photographer's Washington studio on 7th Street Northeast made the print, and its wide format lets viewers take in the whole row.
