Few views of the White House from this period frame it alongside the Treasury Building and Pennsylvania Avenue in a single scene, which is what sets this stereograph apart. Stereo cards like this were sold for parlor viewers, and the paired images gave viewers a sense of depth that a flat photograph could not. The Treasury Building, just to the east of the executive mansion, had taken much of its current form by the late 1860s, so by 1900 the two neighboring government buildings and the busy avenue between them were a familiar civic landmark. The card carries a copyright notice in the name of C.L. Wasson, a reminder of how these views were produced and marketed.
