Dating to about 1840, this etching shows the executive mansion in the years after it had been restored from wartime damage. James Hoban designed the sandstone house in the 1790s, and British troops set fire to its interior in 1814 during the War of 1812. The walls were whitewashed afterward, which helped give the building the name it would carry in everyday use long before it became official. Prints like this one showed the capital's best-known residence to a public that mostly could not travel to Washington to see it.
