Few places in Washington drew as many political demonstrations as the White House, and this print captures suffragists gathered near its grounds, with the date recorded as 1917 in brackets, meaning the cataloguers estimated it. That year the National Woman's Party began picketing the president's gates with banners demanding the vote, the first such protests at the executive mansion. Many of the women were arrested and jailed, and the protests helped keep the question of a federal voting amendment in the national spotlight until Congress passed it in 1919 and it was ratified in 1920. The photograph was made by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's streets and events.
