Crowds gathered at the White House on New Year's Day around 1909, reflecting a long-standing custom of Washingtonians and visitors calling at the executive mansion at the start of the year. The photograph is from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its Washington views show how public occasions at the presidential residence were recorded for a wide readership. Worth noticing are the large groups of people on the grounds and the period clothing, which offer a sense of how these gatherings looked before newsreels became common.
