A group of people stands on the White House grounds in Washington, and the caption card dates the scene only tentatively, between 1900 and 1935. That span covers a period when the Executive Mansion was the working home of the president, and its lawns and paths were more open to visitors than they later became. Photographs like this one record the everyday public presence at the president's house before tighter security narrowed access after the mid-twentieth century. Without names or an occasion noted, the scene is best read as a general view of that time.
