The White House kitchen is the particular subject here, a working room in the executive mansion rather than the public rooms most visitors picture. The photograph was copyrighted in 1901 by C.M. Bell, whose studio in Washington produced a large body of views of government buildings and interiors around the turn of the century. Kitchens of this era were heavily used, with large cookstoves, copper pots and long work surfaces feeding a household that hosted official dinners and receptions. Pictures like this one give a rare look at the working side of a building better known for its formal rooms.
