Images of the White House's working spaces are far less common than its formal rooms, and this one takes the viewer below the state apartments into the kitchen. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who documented the executive mansion in the early 1890s, made the picture, and its record notes African American workers among the subjects, a reminder that the household depended on staff who rarely appear in official accounts. The image dates to roughly 1891 to 1893, when the kitchen was a large, busy operation feeding the presidential family and guests. Look closely at the stoves, pans and work surfaces for a sense of the equipment used to run a household of that era.
