The White House kitchen, pictured here around 1904, was the working heart of the executive mansion during the Theodore Roosevelt years, when the family and their staff fed a household that often included visiting dignitaries and large official dinners. The photograph was made by Waldon Fawcett, a Washington-based photographer and writer whose pictures of the capital's official buildings were widely circulated in the early 1900s. Kitchens rarely appear in such views, so the image offers a glimpse of the practical side of presidential life, with its ranges, cooking equipment and workspaces that kept the building running behind the public rooms.
