The kitchen of the White House, photographed around 1904, offers a rare look behind the public rooms of the executive mansion at a time when its service spaces were largely out of view. The print carries a copyright notice in the name of Waldon Fawcett, a Washington-based photographer who documented the city and its public buildings in the early 1900s. During the Theodore Roosevelt years, the executive residence was being modernized and its household operations expanded, so a picture of the working kitchen records the everyday logistics that kept a presidential household running. Its value lies in showing the practical side of the building, not its ceremonial face.
