A set table stands among the cupboards in this view of the White House kitchen, a working room the public rarely saw. Taken around 1904, it captures the house's service areas during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, shortly after the 1902 remodeling reorganized the executive residence. The print carries Waldon Fawcett's copyright, and Fawcett, a writer and photographer, worked in Washington in the early 1900s. Its plain, practical details stand in contrast to the formal state rooms that usually appear in photographs of the house.
