A mounted moose head above the fireplace makes this dining room stand out from the more formal state rooms usually photographed in the White House. The trophy reflects the outdoor life of Theodore Roosevelt, an avid hunter and naturalist who was president when this view was taken in 1902. That year the building was undergoing major renovation under the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, which reworked its interior to serve a growing staff. The picture gives a rare look at the private, lived-in side of the executive residence.
