The hall in question is the Cross Hall of the White House, the long central corridor on the ground floor that runs east to west and is lined with columns in this view. Hand coloring was a common finish on photographs of the era, added with thin pigment to bring out the marble, gilding and furnishings that black-and-white plates could not show. Interiors like this one were prized by visitors and by the people who ran the executive mansion, since they documented rooms that were otherwise seen only by officials, guests and the occasional reporter. The corridor has served as a passage between the state rooms for generations, so the picture also records an architectural space that has changed little in its basic layout.
