Rather than the building's familiar exterior, this glass negative shows an interior its title labels "Ex. ofc.," most likely the Executive Office, where the president's staff handled correspondence and daily business in the years just after World War I. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented federal buildings and city life in the early twentieth century, made it on a 5 by 7 inch glass plate, a format that recorded fine detail. The Library of Congress dates it only to a range between 1918 and 1921, and it notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which may affect how the image looks.
