The main entry hall of the White House, dated around 1902, shows the public front of the executive mansion just as it was being reworked. That year, under President Theodore Roosevelt, the building underwent a major renovation by the New York firm McKim, Mead & White, which stripped away many later Victorian furnishings and aimed to restore a more formal, classical character. The photograph records a space that visitors and officials passed through daily, so its furnishings and décor reflect the mansion's changing public image at the start of the twentieth century. The Library of Congress date is a question mark, so the exact year is worth checking against the renovation timeline.
