The White House ruin sits high in a sheer sandstone alcove on the north wall of Canyon de Chelly in northeastern Arizona, and this c1922 print shows the dwelling's whitewashed upper walls set against the red cliff. The canyon has been home to Navajo families for centuries, and the ruin itself is the work of earlier Ancestral Puebloan builders, who left stone rooms tucked beneath the overhang. The record links the picture to a Navajo Tours series, a sign of how the canyon was marketed to visitors in the early twentieth century. Its pale plaster, which gives the site its name, is worth noticing as a clear marker in the cliff face.
