The White House ruin sits high in a sandstone alcove in Canyon de Chelly, in northeastern Arizona, and it is one of the best-known cliff dwellings in the region. Its name comes from white plaster on the walls, which stands out against the dark rock above the canyon floor. The canyon has been home to Navajo families for centuries, and the ruin itself was built by the ancestral Puebloan people roughly 800 years ago. This c1922 print, copyrighted by the Navajo Tours company, shows how visitors of the early twentieth century were introduced to the site as a scenic stop.
