The White House ruin, tucked into a sandstone alcove in Canyon de Chelly in northeastern Arizona, takes its name from the pale plaster and wall markings that stand out against the rock. Ancestral Puebloan people built and lived in the dwelling centuries before this photograph was made, and the canyon remains part of Navajo Nation land, where Navajo families still farm and live. The print's notes credit Navajo Tours, a sign that by the 1920s the canyon's cliff dwellings were drawing visitors who traveled in on guided trips.
