The White House kitchen was an unglamorous but essential working space, and this c1901 view records the back-of-house life that kept the executive residence running during the McKinley and Roosevelt years. The photograph is one of a series of interior views made by the Washington photographer C.M. Bell, whose studio was known for documenting the city's public buildings and institutions. Around 1901 the White House was undergoing change: the 1902 renovation, prompted by Theodore Roosevelt's desire for more office and family space, would later reorganize much of the building. Kitchens of this era relied on coal-fired ranges and large hand-prepared batches of food, so the room offers a useful glimpse of domestic labor before modern appliances became standard.
