The White House kitchen, pictured here around 1904, shows the working heart of the executive mansion during the early years of the Theodore Roosevelt administration, a period when the building's domestic spaces were still being modernized. The photograph was made by Waldon Fawcett, a Washington-based photographer whose views of the capital's public buildings were widely reproduced in the early twentieth century. Kitchens were rarely the subject of official portraits, so this image offers a glimpse of the practical side of presidential life, where staff prepared meals for the family and for official guests. It is a useful record of household equipment and working conditions in the Executive Mansion at the turn of the century.
