The kitchen shown here belongs to the White House as it stood after the 1902 renovation, when the building's interior was largely reworked and its service areas were modernized under the direction of the architecture firm McKim, Mead & White. The print, made by the Washington, D.C., photographer Clinedinst and copyrighted around 1906, records a working room of the executive mansion at a time when domestic staff, many of them African American, kept the household running. Its rows of pots and pans and the utilitarian layout show the everyday labor behind the presidential residence, a side of the house that formal portraits and state rooms rarely reveal.
