The White House's north front, the side facing Lafayette Square and the main entrance used by visitors, is the view this print records under a blanket of snow. Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for stereographs and mass-produced news and travel photographs in the early twentieth century, made the image sometime between 1900 and 1950, a span that covers the building's Theodore Roosevelt-era renovations and the New Deal years. Snowfall in Washington is irregular, so pictures like this one, showing the executive mansion's stone facade softened by white, capture a fleeting seasonal look that the city's public buildings rarely wore for long.
