This view turns from the mansion's familiar façade to its grounds, a subject that drew less attention than the building itself. The photograph belongs to Frances Benjamin Johnston's work at the White House in the years between 1889 and 1906, a period when the executive mansion's lawns, paths, and plantings were regularly tended and admired by visitors. Johnston is known for her careful documentation of presidential life and the building's surroundings, and her pictures are valued today as a record of how the grounds looked during those decades. The print itself was made later from the original negative.
