Dwight F. Davis, who served as Secretary of War under President Calvin Coolidge, is the subject of this view from a June 3, 1926, garden party on the White House grounds. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded official life in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s and left behind a large body of glass negatives. Emulsion on glass ages unevenly, which accounts for the streaks and blemishes visible here. The title comes from studio data that has not been independently verified, so the identification of the event and the people in it is worth confirming against other sources.
