The White House conservatory shown here stood on the grounds of the executive mansion in Washington, D.C., and it was a working glasshouse that supplied plants and flowers for the house's rooms and receptions. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented Washington life and its public buildings in the 1890s, made the image, and it is one of the few records of the glasshouse interior from that decade. Greenhouses like this one were a practical necessity for presidential households, which relied on them to keep flowers and ornamental plants in bloom through the winter months.
