Few rooms in the executive mansion are as recognizable as the Red Room, one of the formal parlors on the state floor, where its crimson furnishings gave it a name that stuck. This ca. 1890 view comes from Frances Benjamin Johnston's photographs of the White House, made at a time when the building's public rooms were seen as a showcase of national taste. Johnston's interior studies, which record furniture, wall coverings and room arrangements as they stood in the 1890s, are now valued as a visual record of how presidential entertaining spaces looked before later renovations.
