Pictured here is the New Red Room, one of the formal state parlors on the White House's main floor, as it looked after the 1902 renovation under Theodore Roosevelt. The architects McKim, Mead & White redecorated the room in an Empire style with red silk-damask walls. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued this stereograph around 1903. Its paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth, and such cards were popular parlor entertainment that let Americans far from Washington tour the presidential residence.
