This photograph shows a line of people waiting to be admitted to the White House on January 2, 1922, the kind of scene that was common when visitors could tour the executive mansion on public days. The picture was taken by the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented the city's streets, government buildings and daily life in the 1910s and 1920s. Its place in a January 1922 album, compiled under the name Herbert E. French, makes it a record of ordinary visitors in the early Harding years. The queue itself is the subject, showing how many people came to see the building in person.
