A line of people stands at the White House, captured on a glass negative whose record gives March 23, 1921, though that date is unverified. If accurate, the picture was taken only weeks into Warren G. Harding's presidency, which began March 4, 1921, so it shows the building at the start of a new administration. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose plates documented city streets, monuments and public life in the early twentieth century. Glass negatives of this age often show streaks and clouding from deterioration of their coatings, and those flaws are part of what makes the plate worth studying.
