Around 1906, this photograph shows the business office of the White House, where the president's correspondence, appointments, and paperwork were handled by a small staff. The executive work had only recently moved out of the family quarters. The 1902 remodeling under President Theodore Roosevelt gave the presidency its own offices and set the pattern for the later West Wing. The print is credited to Waldon Fawcett, whose copyright notice ties it to his own work as a photographer. It is worth noticing how the job of running the executive branch had outgrown the building's original household arrangements by this time.
