The business office was one of the least glamorous rooms in the executive mansion, a place for paperwork and bookkeeping rather than ceremony. This c1906 photograph by Waldon Fawcett shows government employees at work in that setting, during the years after the 1902 remodeling that added office space to the White House. Pictures of working staff like these are less common than views of the state rooms, and they show how the presidency was administered day to day.
