Workers were photographed inside the Cabinet Room of the White House in July 1923, while the room was being renovated. President Warren G. Harding was away from Washington on a western trip that summer, so crews could work through the executive offices without the President in residence. The photograph was made by Herbert E. French for the National Photo Company, a firm that documented Washington's government buildings and street life in the 1920s. Pictures like this one capture the less formal side of maintaining the executive mansion, a reminder that the White House has been altered many times over its history.
