Day's signature is the detail that sets this image apart: it shows Secretary of State William R. Day at work in the Cabinet Room of the White House on August 12, 1898. That was the day the United States and Spain signed a protocol ending hostilities in the Spanish-American War, and Day signed for the United States. The photographer, Frances Benjamin Johnston, was one of the earliest women to work as a professional press and documentary photographer, and she made many views of the executive mansion around this period. The room's formal setting and the staged moment give a sense of how the government recorded its own history.
