This engraving records a specific gathering: a cabinet meeting at the White House in 1879, with President Rutherford B. Hayes and seven officials, including John Sherman at the Treasury, William Evarts at State, and Carl Schurz at the Interior. It reproduces a photograph by the Pach studio, which Harper's Weekly printed as a wood engraving in its 1879 volume, since newspapers and magazines of the time could not yet reproduce photographs directly on the page. The names come from a caption card that the record itself describes as unverified, so they reflect the publication's identification rather than a confirmed roster.
