Henry L. Stimson, who led the War Department through most of the Second World War, received the Distinguished Service Medal in this ceremony on the White House lawn on September 21, 1945. Robert P. Patterson and Gen. Jacob L. Devers stand beside him as the medal is presented. The print is a photoprint from Acme Newspictures, a wire-photo service that sent images from events to newspapers across the country, so it reflects the press coverage of the day. Stimson's retirement from government took effect around the same time, which gave the award the feel of a farewell to his years in office.
