Few Civil War-era photographs show a Native American delegation inside the White House, yet this carte de visite captures one posed in the building's conservatory on March 27, 1863. Standing in the center of the back row is John G. Nicolay, President Lincoln's secretary, who handled much of the president's correspondence and appointments. Delegations from Indian nations often traveled to Washington during the war to press treaty and land concerns, and visits like this were usually formal, carefully staged occasions. The card comes from Brady's New York studio, which issued portraits in this small mounted format.
