The flag flying at half-mast over the North Portico is what sets this view apart from other White House images of the period. It honors the crew of the nuclear submarine USS Thresher, which sank during deep-diving trials off the New England coast in April 1963 with all 129 people aboard. The Civil War-era cannons on the grounds in the foreground add a second layer of history, a reminder of the nation's older military past. Together they show how the building served as a stage for national mourning during the Cold War.
