The White House, draped in black and with its flag lowered to half mast, marks the days in August 1923 when the body of President Warren G. Harding lay in state in the East Room. Harding died suddenly in San Francisco on August 2, 1923, while returning from a tour of Alaska, and his body was brought back to Washington for a public farewell. Keystone View Company, a Meadville, Pennsylvania firm famous for its stereoscopic cards, issued this view around 1923, so it captures the mourning moment as a sold-to-the-public souvenir. Stereo cards like this one were meant to be viewed through a special lens to produce a three-dimensional scene.
