Col. William H. Crook is seated and turned toward the camera in this half-length portrait, one of the staff studies Frances Benjamin Johnston made during her work at the White House between 1890 and 1910. Crook had served the executive mansion for decades, and he later recalled his years there in his memoir *Through Five Administrations*. Johnston's portraits of household workers and officials give a rare look at the people who kept the presidential residence running, rather than only the presidents and their families.
